Tips for Sewing on the Bias

Tips for Sewing on the Bias

What is the bias of fabric?

A 45-degree angle from the selvage edge is the fabric’s bias.

Cutting on the bias can distort the fabric.  Since many patterns call for cutting on the bias, here are some tips to help create a beautiful project:

·Before cutting any of the fabric, spray the fabric with starch (Best Press works well but it can be pricey.)

·Finger pressing before ironing can minimize the stretching of the fabric.

·Press the fabric. Don’t iron back and forth but PRESS the fabric.

·Using pins to hold the fabric in place helps reduce stretchiness.
